Kirsten Flagstad 125 years

Today we celebrate one of the greatest opera voices of all time, Kirsten Flagstad, with a gala concert at Ringve Music Museum 125 years after her birth. This year also marks the 85th anniversary of Flagstad's debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the role of Sieglinde in «Die Walküre». Her debut instantly made her the biggest attraction in American opera. Flagstad also worked determinedly to ensure that Norway would have its own opera, and she became the first opera director of the Norwegian National Opera, which opened at Folketeatret in Oslo in 1958. The rich legacy of Kirsten Flagstad is important to remember in today's Opera Norway.

This time we are collaborating with Ringve Music Museum and the Flagstad Museum in Hamar. Regional singers and musicians participate and present excerpts from Flagstad's versatile repertoire. We have had two days of opera workshops in the «private room» for three singers led by Kåre Bjørkøy and Gitta-Maria Sjöberg. Through two different professional days, we get an insight into Flagstad's life, career and her unique voice, which captivated the whole world and filled the largest opera houses.

4 GENERATIONS
Opera Trøndelag works in the spirit of Flagstad by helping and supporting opera talent in the region. The gala concert will therefore be a showcase of Trøndelag's evolving opera culture. Opera Trøndelag's own opera school for singers between the ages of 10 and 18 will sing alongside talented singers at the start of their careers, several of the region's most established singers and internationally recognised performers.

About Kirsten Flagstad

The Hamar girl Kirsten Flagstad (1895 - 1962) became world-famous for her singing, and she is particularly remembered for her interpretations of the dramatic roles in Richard Wagner's operas. Flagstad developed an incomparably lustrous and carrying voice that was tailor-made for Wagner's music. Her unique musicality, stage charisma and personality testified to a great performer who was unrivalled, both in her time and afterwards.
Flagstad also had a major impact on the Norwegian music scene, performing and creating vocal music by many Norwegian composers at numerous concerts around the world.
